Take the time to visit Solutrans, the biennial trade fair for haulage and urban transport professionals, taking place at Lyon Eurexpo, France from 21 to 25 November 2017. This year’s edition promises to be record-breaking, ever more international and innovative!

Record-breaking

The organisers expect all records to be broken relative to the 2015 edition of the show. There will be an increase in exhibitors to 900 with 50% more international brands represented. They will be exhibiting over an area of 75,000 sqm and presenting across all different aspects of the industry. These include industrial and light commercial vehicle (“LCV”) manufacturers and bodybuilders; trailer specialists; workshop equipment, tyres and after sales services suppliers.

International

Only the Eurovision song contest could be more international than Solutrans! In addition to exhibitors from host country France, the top 5 exhibiting countries are Italy, Germany, Belgium, United Kingdom and Turkey.

Sweden is the show’s featured country of honour, sending an official delegation to share its insights on the future of “autonomous and connected vehicles”.

LCV zone

According to the ACEA, France is the leading market for sales of new light commercial vehicles, with an 11.3% increase in sales in Q1 2016 (source: Argus Pro).  It is therefore only natural for there to be an LCV-dedicated zone at Solutrans.

Innovation and awards

The Lyon Métropole Chamber of Commerce and Industry is continuing the tradition that it established in 2001 by sponsoring the Solutrans Innovation Awards which recognises the most striking innovations that have improved the performance of a body–on-frame vehicle. In addition, Solutrans will be hosting the prize for the three internationally renowned awards: the International Truck of the Year; the International Van of the Year and the International Pick-up of the Year, whose winners will judged by an illustrious jury of editors from leading international commercial transport publications.

Do not forget to visit Lyon, France’s second largest city, well-known for its gastronomy and plenty of good restaurants as well as its culture and history. Among the many highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage site are the Old Town of Vieux Lyon; the Place Bellecoeur, a great piazza and the Notre Dame de Fourvière,  a 19th century basilica, from which you get a wonderful view of the city.

Trailers are changing rapidly; from simple lorries behind a truck into digital datacenters on wheels. TPMS

The importance of a daily trailer inspection

Everybody wants to keep their commercial vehicles roadworthy and safe. That’s why the driver’s “walk around check” of their truck and trailer is crucial, according to the recommendations made by several European government road safety agencies.

For example, the Irish Road Safety Authority(RSA) and the UK’s DVSA offer useful guides to keeping commercial vehicles roadworthy and safe. (sources: RSA guide and DVSA guide). Following these daily trailer inspection recommendations makes excellent commercial sense because routine safety checks will lead to fewer unexpected breakdowns.

Drivers on the frontline of “vehicle issues detection”

A driver knows his or her vehicle well, so is therefore likely to be the first to recognise any problems as they arise, or anticipate potential problems. The RSA in Ireland recommends that drivers should carry out a daily inspection of their vehicles. They need to report any faults or potential problems to the individual in their company with designated responsibility for roadworthiness and safety, which is typically the fleet manager. If there are any issues, they must be repaired and the vehicle must be declared safe before allowing the driver to set out on their journey.

Objectives

The driver’s objective is to identify easily-spotted defects through a visual check. The aim is for a daily trailer inspection not for drivers to conduct in-depth investigations of the mechanics of their vehicles, as this is clearly the job of qualified technicians. Nevertheless, there is a legal obligation in most EU countries for the driver to conduct vehicle inspections. For example, the UK’s DVSA states that “failure to comply can lead to a prohibition, a fixed penalty and penalty points on your licence”.

What to look for

There are many helpful one page checklists for a daily trailer inspection which show what drivers should be looking out for such as the DVSA’s “HGV Drivers’ Walk Around Check” which are available online.

A view from the truck

In the truck itself, there are items that can be checked from the driver’s seat including the mirrors and glass, steering, brakes, the horn, visibility through the windows, excessive engine exhaust smoke, windscreen wipers and washers, warning lamps as well as lights and indicators. Stepping outside, the driver can check the exterior of the vehicle for fuel and oil leaks, the state of the battery and coupling security amongst other items.

Around the trailer

On the trailer, drivers need to inspect the electrical connections, brake lines, number plates, markers, reflectors, tyres and wheel fixings, the security of the trailer body and wings, the suspension, electrical connections and the security of the load. (source RSA)

Wash regularly

TruckingInfo’s article entitled “9 Tips for Better Trailer Maintenance” is very helpful but the majority of their tips require more than just a visual check. That said, one of the tips “Wash your trailer regularly” seems particularly relevant, because the cleaner the trailer, the easier it is to spot any problems.

  • Truck and trailer selection. Fleet managers have to decide which trucks and trailers to buy and sell, given their company’s delivery forecasts and budget. For some, this means full ownership of their fleet. Others choose to lease or rent trucks and trailers to meet fluctuating customer demand. What is preventative maintenance?

Preventative maintenance prevents trailers from breaking down, thereby maximising their availability for delivering goods to customers. Most issues with trailers are maintenance related and can be prevented. It is also costlier to repair unexpected trailer defects than it is to prevent them. Congestion and effective route planning

Delivering to customers in congested towns is part of being a successful road transport company. Having prior knowledge of congestion levels in such towns can help your drivers to take the most efficient route-planning decisions.

Top 10 Europe’s most congested cities

INRIX, experts in connected car services and transportation analytics, researched 628 European cities for its INRIX 2016 Traffic Scorecard and found that Moscow is the most congested city in Europe. Drivers spent 91 hours in traffic congestion at peak hours and over 25% of their total drive time (including peak and non-peak hours) in congestion. London is the second most congested city in Europe with 73 hours (12.7% of total drive time in congestion), followed by Paris with 65 hours (11.4%), and Istanbul 59 hours (18.6%). Ranked no 5 is the Russian town of Krasnodar, where drivers spent 56 peak hours in congestion and 24.3% of their total driving time in congestion.

Russian cities dominated the top 10 with 5 entries including Moscow, Krasnodar, Saint Petersburg, Sochi and Nizhny Novgorod. Zurich and Munich were the other two members of the European top 10, placed in 6th and 9th positions respectively.

The results of another congestion survey conducted in 2016, by navigation company TomTom, over a smaller sample of 380 European cities, also featured Istanbul, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, London and Paris in its top 10 most congested European cities. However, it differed in some of its findings. According to TomTom, Bucharest in Romania is the most congested city in Europe including also Marseille, Rome, Brussels and Manchester in the top 10. Urban logistics of the future

Electric vehicles will be at the heart of the solutions for urban logistics issues that industry, politicians, town-planners and analysts are forecasting. The UN believes that by 2030 there will be 41 mega cities worldwide. A mega city is a metropolitan area with a population in excess of 10m people. These mega cities include Moscow, London, Paris and the Rhine-Ruhr area in Europe. [source: UN]

In a 2015 report, analysts Frost & Sullivan predicted that by 2025, 3 out of 5 people will be living in cities or mega cities. The mega cities, in particular, will require tailor-made logistics planning. With a significant increase in consumers purchasing online, the analysts expect there to be 500 million individual deliveries per day. This will necessitate a move towards building supply chains with warehouses and delivery spokes closer to city centres to cope with increased pressure on “last mile” deliveries as shipments in cities become more frequent. Logistics companies will introduce hybrid or fully electric vehicle fleets to respond to increasing environmental concerns and will benefit from economic incentives from governments to provide sustainable freight deliveries.

Reducing CO2 emissions

The rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the concerns about the potentially harmful effects of nitrogen oxide in diesel fuel and carbon monoxide poisoning resulting from defective exhaust emissions are major issues for Europe. Among several initiatives that the European Commission has launched to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is the FREVUE project. FREVUE supports the introduction of electric freight vehicles to demonstrate and evaluate innovative urban logistics solutions in eight of Europe’s largest cities including Amsterdam, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Oslo, Rotterdam and Stockholm. It aims to achieve “essentially CO2 free city logistics in major urban centres by 2030” and argues that achieving this throughelectric vehicles (EVs) will simultaneously eliminate other harmful pollutants in city centres.

France: European electric vehicle pioneer

In 2016, France recorded the highest number of sales of 100% electric vehicles in Europe with 27,307 vehicles sold. TIP and eLCVs

With France pioneering the adoption of eLCVs, it was natural for TIP Trailer Services in France to conduct research into eLCVs. TIP discovered that electric vehicles are relatively simple mechanically with their motors consisting of less than 10 moving parts compared to a few thousand for combustion vehicles.

TIP evaluated the BD Auto, the only eLCV panel van currently available on the market. BD Auto is manufacturing electric LCV’s in the 3.5t-4.5t category, using a Ducato-platform from Fiat which delivers a maximum speed of 90 km/h. It promises a range of 200km per full battery charge, with the charge taking anything from 45 minutes to 8 hours depending on the power of the charging unit. The BD Auto eLCV panel van is available in 3.5 tonne or 4.25 tonne gross vehicle weight versions with a load volume of 11 ranging from 11m3 to 17 m3 with payloads of up to 1500 kg.

First TIP customer eLCV test

In March 2017, TIP Trailer Services tested the BD Auto eLCV over two weeks in Orléans, a town 111 km southwest of Paris, with DPD France, a long established customer. DPD drove an average of 40km per day in the city centre and was delighted with the test.

As Mr. Didier Felice, Vice President Mediterranean Region at TIP Trailer Services, told Supply Chain magazine in March 2017: “Many of our clients have already expressed their interest for this type of vehicle. Indeed, the more demanding anti-pollution measures, the energy transition laws, the government initiatives in favour of sustainable logistics … are all factors which will force transporters to use environmentally-friendly vehicles. Parcel and express delivery companies are already preparing themselves. This is why, as a provider of commercial transport solutions, we need to have an offer that corresponds to this evolution in the market. We believe that our electric vehicle is a real alternative for driving freely in the city centre and making last-mile deliveries without constraints.”
